planes to Culebra

How often do the planes to Culebra crash?
Are these planes safe? I have never been on a small plane but am thinking about chartering a flight because there is no cargo ferry on weekends.
I hear that landing on Culebra is rather tricky..... should I be terrified?

We've been flying to Culebra for about 10 years and to Vieques for 10 years before that. I'm still here. On rare occasions, planes have crashed but I've never been in one. They are safe!. I'd say they're safer that the cab ride from San Juan to Fajardo at times. I believe that there is a passenger ferry on weekends. - check under transportation to left. The landing is shall we say "unique," but they've done it hundreds of time I'm sure. I expect it will be scary for you, but the whole trip is about 1/2 hour.

Good luck,
Michael

Chrissy, there are no cargo ferry on the weekend, but there are passenger ferries on the weekend and holidays, if you are afraid of flying.

No. They won't allow you to board the airplane drunk.

I find that a bloody mary helps, but I wouldn't drink that much; you'll puke on the pilot.

No one told me about the fun landing; so the first time I was a bit white knuckled. Having done it seven times, now, I just try to enjoy watching the looks on the newbies faces!

Seriously, these pilots are very talented. Have a bloody and trust them.

I am flying in on my birthday to see my Sis, M.J., I dont figure the plane will crash, since I have lived to this point its been deemed by the gods that it would useless to take me now and waste a perfectly good airplane, I have a better chance of crashing to the floor at Mamacitas! See you There! Jon

Okay, please tell me what is so scary about landing in Culebra. I took a small plane from San Juan to Vieques a few years ago and it was the first small plane I was ever on. Had it not been for bad weather the day before, the flight to Vieques would have been uneventful. Even though we lost a bit of altitude a few times, it was a nice flight, and the flight back was absolutely beautiful. So what makes the flight to Culebra different?

How funny! The landing was interesting!! I closed my eyes. Next time I might be brave enough to keep them open. But you'll be fine, I felt very comfortable with how professional the pilots seemed.

Just curious, under transport is says that round trip ticket from FAJARDO is about $40.00, how accurate is that pricing, and what airline from the ones listed offered that rate? Do any of you know? Or which is the better airline for your buck? Thanks in advance for the info.

WE fly Air Flamenco from Fajardo. Those pilots make that trip 3-4 times a day, and while approach and landing on Culebra is similar to an amusement ride, the planes and pilots are very capable. You should never have bad weather, and a rare chance of a little turbulence. The max speed on takeover with a loaded plane is app. 80mph, and these planes are very well maintained and cruise at 120. All the latest instruments and gps are on board.
They take great care to do it right, as their lives and business are on the line all the time.
Luggage and passenger are weighed so the planes are balanced correctly for max safety, etc.
In the event you may still be skittish(no need actually), the flight is only 15 minutes, and yhou can keep eyes closed for the flight.. but it is beautiful!!
The landing is a pleasant experience. I have photos of the flight from the plane if u want.

I was operations manager for West Indies Airways based at Isla Verde in 1957. I flew many times to Culebra in one of our Cessna 170 aircraft that held one pilot and three paxxengers.

At that time there was no runway or facilities at Culebra and we had to ensure that the Navy was not having live firing on the northwest corner of the island. We used a cowpath for a runway and if the Navy was firing our approach was over the water landing downwind towards the hills just north of the cowpath. The uphill slope of the cowpath helped slow the plane on the landing roll from the higher speed of the downwind approach. I always thought Culebra was a beautiful little island and hope someday to see what it is like today.

Is there any chance you have photos of the approach to the airport at Culebra or of the airport itself? As you can read in my posting in this thread I flew to Culebra in 1957 when the airstrip was just a cowpath.

dont take the ferry! even though it was about $3 the 75 minutes seemed like the 5 hour flight there. at least 6 kids were throwing up over the side and i felt sick for about three hours after we got to the beach. the 20 minute flight is so worth it and you get amazing views and pictures of the other islands

Are the cargo ferries (for car transport) worth the lower cost relative to a flight? I have heard that you can get easily bumped from a trip, the pre-trip wait can be long, and many get seasick.

Hi Mel,

your description of landing in Culebra in the late '50 makes me want to fly the 'old way'. I too with my father landed in many cow pastures in the '70s and '80's. Thanks for sharing your awesome experience!

I have recently flown from the main Island to Culebra. The trip is absolutely beautiful and in my opinion, not long enough. The prices on the transport section of this site are very acurate. Most every airline charges the same for the particular route.

Enjoy the trip and soak up the beauty from above...

Melanie

in case I'm not too late, don't look back, go for it. The final approach over Flamenco is a view I'll always remember.

On the way back we made a stop on Vieques and from hundreds of feet up you could see rays swimming deep underwater.

Air Flamenco's website says flights are on demand, but up-thread someone sounded like they do have a schedule...any info?

If the pilot has many gold chains and medallions around his neck that is a very good sign. If a water landing was anticipatied he'ld sink like a rock.

Michael: heh, understood - island time=island schedule

but is getting Air Flamenco to fly 4 from SJU to Culebra comparable to Isla Nena? Air Culebra is a little steep in comparison. I ask 'cause my friends and I are all coming in a few hours apart. I don't mind going ahead, but they've never been. I also want to see the looks on their faces on landing (it's ok to say it now, based on her posts, Chrissy has already gone).

Wish I was there now.

Is there still only the one ATM?

again, I wish I was there now.

Cool isn't it? I love the line of cays the plane follows after it leaves the main island.

glad you had fun, I meant to warn that the ATM gets depleted early and fast on a weekend like that, but it sounds like you made it ok.

Cheers!
