Are llamas allowed on the beach?
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Mort (---.tampabay.res.rr.com)
Date:   07-23-08 14:18

Recently there have been the usual questions about lodging, transportation, snorkeling, and Blue Lizard sunscreen. But I think the board should discuss important issues, too.

A few months ago I posed to the board the question "Are llamas allowed on the ferry?"

The answers were inconclusive, and you know how hard it is to reach ferry personnel on the phone. So I never did find out for sure.

But this morning I suddenly realized that even if they let me take a llama on the ferry, what good does that do me if I can't bring it to Flamenco?

And that brings up the age-old moral question of: "Is it right to patronize any place where a llama is not welcome?"

I guess I'm asking for some help and guidance here. This board has always been my moral compass.

What would you do?

Don't they have the bad habit of spitting and neck wrestling. And since you seem especially close to him/her even more so, because they think you are their equal?

I think you are looking at some bad lawsuits from thong clad men and women who think you had the llama spit on them on purpose!

Enjoy Culebra!

psssssttt...Mort...if you go down to the very end of Flamenco, right around the headland, you will find many llamas and their owners. They have been camping there for months and are ready to protest any who challenge their right to be there.
They are a peaceful group, if somewhat boring. There is no alcohol or music allowed (other than the gentle clapping of hands, or soft humming, so as not to disturb the llamas). They are all vegans and passionate members of PETA, which leaves quite a few mosquitos and sand crabs free to do as they will.
Chanting (in a humming way) for hours on end takes up a great deal of their time, along with using sustainable bamboo rakes in the sand for Zen gardens and meditating quietly until they fall asleep. I'm sure you & your llama would be very welcome to join them.
Please keep this info to yourself, or soon we'll be on the Travel Channel as the Most Lovely Llama Beach in the World, spoiling yet another little secret of Culebra.

I can't thank everyone enough for the thoughtful and heartfelt responses.

MJ, I have hiked through that area, and can you believe it... I NEVER SAW THE LLAMA GROUP! It's amazing how quiet and unobtrusive they must be. It's almost like the "lost races" that are found in the Amazon rainforest from time to time.

I think this group is exactly what I'm looking for. It sounds so peaceful. Do you think they like techno beat music? As always, I'm bringing my 100-watt boom box and its integrated laser light display. In the past I always stayed in the Flamenco campground but I'm no longer allowed there, so I'm looking for a new pastoral environ.

I think your boom box (which I'm assuming is made from recycled materials) would make a wonderful storage unit for vegetables or llama pellets or perhaps even ice, which might short the wiring, but soon you will be beyond those evil worldly pleasures and glad of the almost complete silence, save for the gentle chewing of cud and macrobiotic fare.

As with all things mystical, those who have eyes to see will find the llama group exactly where I've directed. Bring water. In a can.

Wow, kind of like unicorns! This is getting more exciting all the time.

But I'm not sure we should be letting the word out about all this. Remember what happened at Lourdes. It used to be a quiet little spot, but now it draws 5 million visitors a year and has the second-most hotels in France, trailing only Paris.

Is this what we want for our beloved little island?

And just how would we get 5 million people to Culebra each year? Adding more seats to the top deck of the ferry might handle a million or two, but still...

Well, the good thing is, not many people (world wide) are into llamas. And not many will take the time to join a llama vegan non-alcohol PETA based chanting encampment.

Gotta go with the numbers. No miracles happening here! No llama deposits with the face of holy people embedded to sell on ebay. It's all good.

And because it seems to be down to you and me, we'll take this to the email zone. For the rest of you, llama deposits aren't so bad, sort of like goats.

I can't help but agree with Richard.

And as for Fernando Lamas, he's been dead for years, so you're probably thinking of Lorenzo. But he's been barred from Culebra since 1997 due to a well-publicized [deleted] incident with a non-consenting [deleted]. He spent thirty days in prison for it, during which time he was [deleted] three times. Crime just doesn't pay.

Llamas have excellent fiber. If you spit back at them often enough, they will allow you to cut their fur for those thermal blankets need for the freezing Culebra nights!

Everyone neglects the forlorn alpaca or its abandoned stepchild the vicuña.

Sure they're not as glamourous or dashing as llamas. Not every species gets to have mutant versions parodied in film musicals starring the likes of Rex Harrison, projected across drive-in movie screens in the Mojave desert in the early 70's in a double feature with The Sound of Music and later recycled into the latest Eddie Murphy vehicle, but still...

Where will obscure hooved mammal discriminatory criteria end? "I'm sorry, that camel is clearly bactrian and not the dromedary I requested".

Really.

Sometimes you people make me SO mad.

Richard, not even google could help me come up with any defense to your post. "Information No results found for "forlorn alpaca"." "No results found for "abandoned vicuna"."

But, movies aside, who has ever heard of a Llama Sweater? Llamas are the identity crises poster child! How often is the muttered phrase, one hump or two? heard around the table?

Did you know if you do a google search on llama jokes, you get 648,000 hits? The alpaca gets 124,000 and the vicuna only 17,600. And the jokes are bad...truly bad. Here is one example that should have you re-considering your angst (and thanking me for not posting the first 6).

7. What do guard llamas tell their sheep around the campfire at night?
Answer: They tell each other scary goat stories.

Have mercy!

Let's officially expand the scope of this to include the entire dromedary family.

It is my fervent hope that this will serve as the definitive dromedary thread on this board so that we aren't pestered with the same old questions all the time.

Next time someone posts such a question, our answer can be an indignant "Jeez, don't you know how to use a Search button?".

MJ, I don't think that Michael was necessarily saying that he doesn't care for llamas, though he clearly isn't so fond of the spitting.

He's just saying that he likes the idea of not having redundant threads.

But since 90% of all threads are things that have been asked before, the activity of the board would drop to almost nothing if we didn't allow redundancy.

But that other 10% sure is a lot of fun!

Richard, one last thing... the reason that no results were found is because there ARE no forlorn alpacas! Nor abandoned vicunas! That's like searching for "free email offer of a million dollars from an African prince". You just never come across something like that. Whoops, maybe that was a bad example.

BREAKING NEWS......

I did some research online and found answers to the most commonly asked questions about llamas:

Are there different kinds of llamas?

The “llama” family consists of four branches: Alpacas, Guanacos, Llamas and Vicuñas. Alpacas and llamas have been domesticated for approximately 4,000 years, whereas guanacos and vicuñas are mostly found in herds in the wild.

Do they make good pets?

Llamas can make very loving pets. The key to having a happy llama is having more than one. If you are considering a llama for a pet keep in mind they are a herding animal and will thrive with a companion.

Do they spit?

They have been known to spit but rarely at humans. They will spit between themselves when there is a dispute over food or territory. Llamas who may have been previously abused or a llama that is a new mom may spit at unfamiliar visitors.

What kind of sounds do they make?

Males will make a very strange sound while they are breeding which is called an orgle. They will sometimes make this sound if there is an open female on the other side of the fence. Females will sometimes make a clucking sound at a male over the fence. It seems to mean “Back off! Don’t even think about it!”

*******

So, as you can see, llamas are almost EXACTLY like humans.

We have to exceed 40 in order to set a new 2008 record.)

Richard, let's add orgle to our vocabulary and try to fit it into at least one thread per month.

There is absolutely something cosmic going on. We have Debbie's CNN mention. And then llama was the answer to a clue in the SJ Star crossword today (and we can be fairly sure that CNN and the San Juan Star and this forum do not have shared connections...unless the worldwide communications conspiracy is as deep as some fear - that would make me VERY afraid).
I don't remember the clue but I do remember laughing LOUD out loud and getting a couple of puzzled glances from the street passers by. I know it did NOT mention Culebra, so I think we are still safe. For now.

(Debbie, they do not use tubs at Flamenco; the llamas have adapted to salt water bathings quite well, though they do not go underwater so you won't be seeing any on forthcoming dives)

In an attempt (futile no doubt) to raise the level of discourse in this thread, I draw your attention to a poem about the llama:

The one-l lama,
He's a priest.
The two-l llama,
He's a beast.
And I will bet
A silk pajama
There isn't any
Three-l lllama.*

Using Ogden Nash to raise the level of anything but the edges of a sardonic grin is unfair!

We (that is the royal we, at the time of this posting) will reach DEEP back in history. This is taken from a pretty obscure website that I think I'll let stay in the mist. And no, it's not porn.

"Yup, yup yup. Here's another good one, out of the mouths of those shaggy creatures of the Andes we all know and love. Some of us even know and love them braised lightly and eaten with a raspberry vinaigrette on a bed of crispy arugula...but know matter how you slice it, (preferably rather thin - they're kinda tough) it's LLAMA."

[editor note: a poem followed but I am omitting it to spare the poor llama that wrote it while he was undoubtedly drunk and never meant for it to be published]

(the article goes on to say...)

In the somewhat less-than-immortal words of that pointy-hat-wearing historical terrorist Ghengis Khan:

"I'd rather have my entrails trampled by a wild musk ox -- while I am still connected to them -- than be forced to read a llama's poetry." "

From the mouth of a Mongol...

Arroz: you really don't want to get this into Nash. really.

"A panther is much like a leopard..."

well except for the peppering part.

Michael: I have a great capacity for mundanity and redundance and am actually excited by the idea of sending people off on red herrings and misinformation. My stories go NOWHERE!

(does that trawler still pull up with the really good tuna burgers on Fridays?)

there's a freebie.

Culebra, hmm. take a sweater.

just say the word and I'll fill Wiki with reports of the freakish nature of the local climate that often experiences hail in April or the annual Crocus Festival in August, when after the harvest (saffron, for a touch of plausibilty even though the season is wrong) the residents (inexplicably) put on dirndls and lederhosen and sing "Lost in the Supermarket" by the Clash in a large gathering.

I'll say it's stunning to behold.

Debbie, I have to be honest. I feel that the photo is more than a bit inappropriate. Can't llamas have some privacy? How would any of us like to have a bathing photo splattered all over the Internet?

It's this kind of thing that give llamas a "reputation", if you know what I mean. And it's completely undeserved --- in most cases, anyway.

Still, that photo was taken at "Second Time Around Mini Farm", so it's highly possible that the llama in the photo has "a past". But this incident will only serve to slow down the rehabilitation process.

This is quite a thrill! The longest thread of the year so far!

But it still has a long way to go to beat the all-time record of "Share a taxi to Fajardo on Jun 28?" which had 47,216 responses.

Whoever started that thread somehow found the pulse of the board, and it will probably never be duplicated. It was like a perfect storm: the perfect question at the perfect time.

Fondly...fondly (say that about 10 times, what a strange word); I can't say fondly would describe how I remember any threads. Outraged me, tired me, amused me, abused me, confused me, but fondly? Nope, I'm drawing a blank on fondled feelings concerning threads...except in that generalized glad sort of 'oh, I'm not the last of my kind!' awareness. Is that a fondly feeling?

Richard, you mean: Crocus Harvest and BYOB 80's Sing-along - Ferry Dock - August?

If so, that's obscure enough that it probably won't be removed.

If it doesn't exist in real life, it should!

Holy Llama!! Somehow I missed that! It's perfect. But maybe we should note that the llama herd is somewhat mystical and not seen by everyone.

FORUM RECORD ALERT
================

Hey, we have a lot to be proud of! MJ's previous post set the ALL-TIME RECORD for number of posts in a single thread in the history of this board. It's fitting that MJ was the one to do it.

I checked back to when this forum started in late 2003. The previous record was 55 posts in a thread a few years ago. I would tell you the name the thread, except I'm afraid that someone will resurrect it and usurp the new record. Anyway, many of the posts in that thread were one-liners between a couple of people, one of whom was named Stan as I recall. There wasn't NEARLY the meaningful content that we've had in this thread.

So, a big shout-out to all who participated in this sublime thread-of-all-threads. It just shows what can be done when we work shoulder to shoulder (or in some cases, flank to flank) to accomplish something that just might live forever.

This is a llama. Oh, no photos here! Well, here is a link to see a llama somewhere else!

http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/other/llama/

That should tell you all about llamas. Culebra llamas do not seem to keep the heavy coats of other regions, however and cannot be used to make sweaters. Sweaters in this locale are the people who take care of the llamas.

MJ, you made me laugh out loud!

Alexis, thanks for being a good sport.

Every once in awhile, a few of us come up with a thread discussion that is a departure from the usual. Most Valuable Posters like MJ, Michael, Jeannie, Debbie -- and so many others -- answer so patiently to all the common questions. I feel they deserve something different once in awhile.

At least, that's my excuse. And I'm sticking with it.

They are not nearly as cute. Nor as magical. I'd have to vote no, Jeannie. But I'm just one vote.

Hola! I wanted my poem to be part of this post too. Hope you like it! LOL!!!!

Pepe, La Llama
loved to drink pina colada
under the cool shade of a palm tree.

He decided to pitch a tent
to Flamenco beach he went
joining good friend Mort in Section E.

They partied all night
the morning came, Mort took flight
the llama was a sad sight indeed.

His island friend MJ
made joyful his day
encouraging him to salsa with glee.

Debbie a plan she did contrive
inviting all for a fun dive
Pepe with delight had a quick pee!

Richard sailed them to Culebrita
aboard he had a great siestecita
waking up to merengue music and whiskey.

Michael informed them of the time
to go malnourished would be a crime
I'm famished, we're hungry!

Jeannie arrived with mofongo
arroz, habichuelas, asado and mondongo.
What a great meal, YIPPIE!

Happy travels! J

But I don't think we necessarily have to EVER end this thread! Perhaps we can resurrect it each year on International Llama Day.

Truly A true story...

I used to call my mama
mama Llama
I thought it sounded funny

Hey mama Llama!
I called her at first morning light
Llama Mama Pajama
I called her at night

My mama Llama went over the fence
to where the happy llamas roam
And now I am the Mama!

Yet somebody must have known
And so they wrote me a tome
"Mama Llama Pajama"
About a Mama Llama
And her little lonely Pajama Llama

What a book
It is worth a look
Particularly when you miss your
Mama Llama!

With Love-
For my Mama

Sorry, I could not let it die :) Much too good of a thread. But, the previous poetry, is better by far than mine. You could have categories, Non-Fiction and Fiction Poetry, Limericks, Haiku etc. All, of course Llama or better still llama beach themed. :)

Angelina, I like it!

You are 100% right that this thread badly needs a haiku.

(Note: typically haikus have three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively. No rhyming.)

Here is one that is extremely heartfelt and deeply personal:

Sun rises on beach
Llamas approach to greet us
Reality unsure

A few years back, my brother Jim wrote a haiku that did not follow the syllable rules at all. So I wrote this limerick...

Jim, it's just not like you
To not know the rules of a haiku.
I thought you might
Try to do things right!
To which Jim just replied: "faiku".

Great Haiku and Limerick guys!

The latest "Llama Mama" book
New from the creator of "Llama Llama Red Pajama!"

"Llama Llama
mad at mama"
by Anna Dewdney
"A National Bestseller!" (according to the Scholastic catalog)

Perhaps we should suggest a topic to the author ...where
Llama Llama goes to the beach and rides a ferry!

Apparently in this current book he is pitching a fit in the grocery store.
I think the beach sounds more fun...putting on sunscreen so he doesn't burn, listening to the lifeguard, watching out for undertow, not harassing sharks, not leaning over the rail on the ferry, important messages in this topic I think :)
(a side bar: why didn't I think of writing this book? I thought of mama llama pajama at least 15 years ago...I could be rich by now a well know children's book author... own a house on Culebra...ahh sigh someones always invents/authors things first! dang.)

Listen closely and you will hear the llamas singing Happy Birthday dear Llama boy, happy birthday to you....
