Flight Issues
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I just got an email last night saying my flight from the states to SJU has been changed by THREE HOURS. I was arrivng at 2 and we were going to catch a flight to culebra, but now we aren't arriving till 5pm which leaves us with little or no options for getting to Culebra that day.

Any thoughts on how we can get to Culebra same day? THANKS

Your only chance (I think) is to not check any bags, get off that plane and outside as soon as possible, jump into a taxi (better to call Henry 787-632-9600 and explain the situation) and try to make the 7pm ferry. If you miss it, stay at the Fajardo Inn ... relax ... and either take the 9am ferry or fly from Fajardo that next morning.

You also likely have time to catch the last Air Flamenco flight if you are able to do carry-on only on your States to SJU flight. It leaves at 6pm. It's cutting it close, but I think it's do-able.

Kevin, charter flights are available from Air America Inc. (787) 276-5669. You book the whole flight for $495 (1-5 passengers) one-way. There may also be overtime fees being after 5 p.m., but they go where and when YOU want. It comes out to about double the others. We almost booked with them, but then worked it out another way. Good Luck!

41 hours and counting! Trent.

Definitely check with Air Flamenco. Especially if you tell them the situation. I've gotten in at 5, ran for a taxi, got there in plenty of time to catch the fight. As Debbie says though, that's without checked luggage (the only way I fly, unless absolutely unavoidable).

I booked with Air Flamenco for July 19 and was told they no longer have the 6PM flight, only the 4:30 one.

Well, you have limited options. My own advice would be to find someplace cheap to stay (lots of places have been suggested here for exactly the event you've found yourself in), relax after your long day, and figure out if you want to fly or ferry over here the next morning. Vacations shouldn't be crazy stressed right at the start if at all possible.
Hope that doesn't sound cavelier, Vicki...we've all been there before and it can be crazy making or just sorted out and dealt with. Since I've gone the crazy making route myself, and learned it doesn't get me here one second faster, I go the other route now!

Frank's advice is good. That's what we did. The Fajardo Inn is great. That way you can start your vacation on a more relaxing and leisurely note.

These days, what are the odds of a flight landing on time at 5:00p? Probably only 50/50. I wouldn't depend on an on-time arrival in order to make other connections.

If you spend the night in Fajardo, AND you're an early riser, you can catch the early morning cargo ferry and be on Culebra before sunrise.

Is the Cargo Ferry at 4:30 am?

All the ferry times are dependable right? Don't know much about the ferry, we flew last time and were planning on flying again, but stuff happens.

Thanks everyone for the advice

The cargo ferry leaves Fajardo at 4am, arriving in Culebra about 6:00. I would recommend the 9am passenger ferry instead, however as nothing will be open (car rental, etc.) & it would be unlikely that you could check into your accomodation at 6am.

Re: flying, you could check with Flamenco & explain the situation. They haven't been running the later flight from San Juan lately, however, you might want to speak with them & perhaps they would put a flight on-especially if there are more than 2 people.

Lastly, the 7pm ferry would be an option-especially, as someone mentioned, if you are flying carry-on only. We generally recommend a taxi gentleman named Al (787-590-9001) who is very reliable & reasonable ($60-70 San Juan to Fajardo) to our guests.
