Accomodation on beach
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Peter Wilson (---.mia.bellsouth.net)

Hi all

My wife and I are trying to find somewhere on the beach on Culebra to stay for our honeymoon. We would like it to be as nice as possible, preferably with kitchenette. From what I've read it seems Zoni and Flamenco are the nicest beaches, Zoni being quieter - which is what we want.

I already enquired at Zoni Beach House and was wondering what our other options may be or if there is another nice quiet swimming beach on the island with accomodation very close by.

Many thanks,

Peter Wilson

In its wisdom, Culebra has only had a minimal amount of actual "on the beach" lodging built. The two beaches with lodging are Tamarindo and Flamenco. Tamarindo Beach Cottages on the former and Culebra Beach Villas and Villa Flamenco beach on the latter. I've not stayed there but I recall a post declaring Villa Flamenco Beach to be the quieter of the two Flamenco properties. Tamarindo beach is more of a shells and coral bits beach, while Flamenco is white sand. The other beaches have villas nearby, and Melones has accomodations, but not on the beach, per se. Out Zoni way, the development is all in the hills above the beach, with views to the Virgin Islands and to the northern cayos of the Culebra archipelago.

Folks used to heavily developed beaches might be put off by the scarcity of beachfront rentals, but it allows these pristine beauties to remain so. Many enjoy lodging at guesthouses within walking distance of the restaurants, bars and stores in town, and planning day outings to the many beaches. If budget allows, you'll probably find the combination of solitude, view, trade-winds and posh environs above Zoni to be the most 'honeymoonish'.

I've been to Zoni beach house and its situation with the beach off of the yard is amazing. It's a simple place (not rustic, just simple) but if I wanted to be on the beach I'd choose Zoni or a place on Melones (check with Vacation Planners), another very simple place but oh my! You're on the beach, it's private, and romantically? Yes, it's got the goods. If Zoni beach house is available, it is not a bad choice at all. Whatever you choose, happy honeymoon and congratulations!!
I will make the caveat, if you want room service or any other sort of service delivered...neither of these places will have that. But being as you are checking out Culebra, you must already know that.

I'd suggest a place near Zoni Beach. It's quiet and very peaceful. We've rented a place just up the hill from Zoni though Jim at Culebra Island Realty. The house was very private and just a 5-10 minute walk down to the beach.

Thank you all for your responses, they've been very helpful. I think Zoni is looking like the best choice for us. We don't mind a short walk of 5 - 10 mins or so and it seems to be what we're looking for.

Kristi, which place did you rent? I have been looking at several but hearing personal experience of one always helps!

Many thanks

MJ, that's not strictly true. For the right price, anything is possible. In fact, for the right price, Richard, Frank, Doug, Michael and I will attend to their every culinary need while regaling them with endless stories from this forum (and beyond).

Enjoy Culebra!

I bet Michael added the word *culinary* :)

And yes, for a price, catering can be had, etc. etc. But boys, I'm right here so they won't have to spring for extra plane fare. I'll save some of the money to buy you drinks when next you get here...am I thoughtful or what?

If you want privacy close to a "beach" you can't beat Melones Beach House. I put "beach"in quotes because it's not really a swimming beach but it is sandy and there are pool like areas which can be over your head (depending on the tide). The snorkeling is great near there too. The set up is a bit strange (kitchen on the porch) but the privacy, the hammock on the back porch, and sitting outside eating breakfast, lunch and supper more than make up for any oddity. The space inside is well laid out and comfortable. Even when it rains you can sit on the front or back porch.

Admittedly, MJ, you are certainly a wiser choice dollar for dollar, but I think that the Five Guys can guarantee an eclectic experience unlike any other. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, though.

(Michael, I just sent you an urgent email about the link. Incredibly urgent. Well, maybe not so urgent, but funny. But can you look at it, and then delete this particular post once you've seen it?)

pony up the plane fare and I can fetch better than Rover.

and I usu. don't chew slippers.

Zoni and above Melones are both secluded and amazing sites, the real question is do you want sunrise or sunset? and M is much closer to town.

Next door to Culebra Beach Villas is Villa Flamenco Beach. They have 6 units. (4 efficiencies on the second floor and 2 one bedroom units on the first floor.)
The place is spotless and run by very nice people. (max & esmeralda) My wife and I stayed there for many years and never had a bad experience. You can contact Esmeralda at flamenco6@aol.com or 787-742-0023 for more info.
