Questions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Myself, DD and DH will be arriving at SJU at 3:10PM 7/19. DH and DD are taking taxi to Fajardo to catch the 7PM ferry. I wanted to ride with them to Fajardo and catch a flight after 5PM to Culebra, but have been unable to find out if there is actually a flight that leaves this late on this Sat. I have a couple of questions: Could the taxi drop me at Isla Grande prior to taking DD and DH to ferry dock in Fajardo? How much out of the way would this be and how much extra would I expect to pay for it? Would it be cheaper to take taxi to Isla Grande myself or to just catch a flight out of SJU since there will only be one of me? I am flying over early to pick up our rental car and buy groceries prior to picking up DH and DD at ferry dock on Culebra.
TIA.

Hola Vicki! I think it all depends on logistics and $. With gas prices going up in Puerto Rico, it's going to reflect on how much drivers charge. Also, time is of the essence. It's only about 10-15 min. drive from San Juan airport to Isla Grande and then about 45 min. to Fajardo. If you can find a driver that could give you a price for both trips together, it could work out nicely for you. A taxi to Isla Grande is now almost $20 (plus tipping/bag) and then whatever it would cost to take the other 2 passengers to Fajardo. There are 2 drivers frequently mentioned on the FORUM, John ($65) and Henry (look up both of their #'s on the FORUM) that take passengers from the airport to Fajardo. Maybe you can set up an arrangement with one of them that suits your needs for a reasonable price. Also, there are planes that take off from the Fajardo airport, Isla Nena and Air Flamenco (Numbers are in the TRANSPORT section of this website), call them to find out their itineraries and cost. This way you can all travel to Fajardo and you can arrive earlier to Culebra, let the others board the ferry later. Happy travels! J

Thanks Jeannie. I have called both Isla Nena and Air Flamenco and have been told to call back in July, which makes me a little nervous. Neither of them would give me the cost. Can I pretty much be assured I can get a flight on one of these airlines, neither of which has scheduled flights from Fajardo, if I wait until July? I really had rather ride with my family to Fajardo and catch a flight from there. TIA.

Vicki,

I certainly wouldn't wait until July. That is a really busy time of year. Call back again and see if you get a better response from a different person. It would be most cost efficient for all of you to taxi together to Fajardo, and then for you to fly from there - the flight is $25-$30.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Vicki, I'm curious... Why don't all three of you fly from Isla Grande? The ultimate price difference is relatively minor and it would be a lot faster and easier.

Flying from Isla Grande is time effective but, when there are 3 people and you are on a budget, it's $300 + taxi ($40) to fly 3 people round trip vs. maybe being creative in your travel ways and saving here and there. In my family, there are 3 of us and we are always on the budget vacation so we can stretch our $ and make the best of our trip. I agree with Debbie, don't wait until July, you want to make all your reservations now and relax and focus on other trip preparations. Call again and insist (nicely) on a more concrete quote. July is the season for the locals and their family members coming from the U.S. We went to Culebra in July '07 on a Wednesday and the Fajardo Port Authority was packed with travelers. Good luck and let us know of your adventures. Happy travels! J

Thanks everyone. Mort, we will be bringing our own dive equipment and would have to pay the extra $$ for overweight luggage, hence, my DD and DH have decided to take the ferry. We checked all options $$ wise and the ferry with DH and DD seemed the best and cheapest option. Plus DD wanted to ride the ferry over. I will keep calling about the flight from Fajardo to Culebra.

Vicki, with all that equipment and hassle, I'm still thinking it's worth an extra $40 for 100 additional pounds of luggage.

They might not even charge you at all for the extra weight if they're not full.

After seven of us battled the ferry with 20 pieces off luggage, I was wishing that we could have flown! With seven people, though, it's a LOT cheaper to take the ferry. But when my wife and I go back in December with our camping equipment, we're definitely flying even though we'll likely have to pay extra for the extra weight.

But you've probably already looked at all this multiple times!

In my house, "DH" stands for "Dumb Husband".
Unless my wife reads this post, then it will be "Dead Husband".

It's something seen in cruise forums quite a bit. I believe it's Darling Husband and by extrapolation Darling Daughter. Correct, Vicki?

Ordinarily I would instigate turning this thread into creative meanings for DH and DD, but out of respect for Vicki, I am not going to.

Aw hell, I can't resist. DD could easily mean............... No, I promised. Must... control... self.... must... control... self....

weren't thongs covered (?) on another thread?

anyway before these txt msg abbs become a new dialect of American Standard English, I think we should randomly toss out acronyms and see what is deciphered. DGMS!

Richard, there was a noticeable lack of thong threads during the past year, so I think we're playing catch-up right now.
