You can't make reservations on the passenger ferry because it is a first come first serve unless you're a resident and you have priority to travel before anyone else. Reservations are only for the cargo ferry if you want to take your vehicle and it is recommended you do that 3 weeks before your departure date. What you can do is purchase your tickets in advance, that way you already have them and can get that out of the way. Numbers for Fajardo Port Authority: 787- 801-0250 and 0251, Ext. 221, 222, 230, 234, 787-860-8618, 787-863-0852 and 0705. Try all of them because they are not always very good about answering the phone. Call between 8 AM-11 AM and 1-3PM. If you get through, purchase round trip tickets with a credit card and they will give you a confirmation # to pick them up at the booth. Get there early enough because even though you have a paid ticket, you can get left behind if the ferry is over booked.
You may luck out though, you are traveling to the island on a Tuesday which is a slow day (weekdays are slow days). You could probably get a ticket on the day of your departure if you can't get one before. Get there early to secure a passage on the ferry. Happy travels! J

OK, just making sure i have this correct:
I want to get on the 3pm passenger ferry on a Sunday, but there are no reservations, right? If all goes well, we should be in Fajardo by 1230p or 1p - is that enough time to buy tickets and have a good chance of getting on?

thanks!

Sunday is a busy day for ferries crossing in both directions. I would recommend calling the numbers I mentioned above and try to get your ticket in advance that way you have a good chance of passage on the ferry. If not, as soon as you arrive at the pier in Fajardo, get in line and purchase your tickets. If you arrive by 1PM you should have enough time for the 3PM ferry, it will depend on how busy it is. Unfortunately, you can't make any reservations. Happy travels! J

i'm confused!

Hola! If you make a reservation you are guaranteed a space, most of the time without paying. Fajardo Port Authority doesn't operate that way. They like to see the immediate money exchange. Hence the saying "no ticket no laundry", in this case no money, no passage on the ferry. When you obtain a ferry ticket via phone/credit card purchase, even though you have paid for a seat, your passage on the assigned ferry is not guaranteed. If you're late and they have overbooked and have filled up the passenger capacity with passengers that were already waiting in line ahead of you, you could be left out, even with a paid ticket purchased in advance. What they will do is put you on the next ferry. If they are finished for the day, they will put you on the first ferry the next morning or give you a refund. To them it's no big deal, to the tourist, they have ruined their travel plans for a day.
I purchased my tickets a month in advance and when we arrived at Fajardo, it was chaotic with so many visitors. It was even on the news! The ferry we were scheduled to go on was already full (with people in line ahead of us) so they borrowed the ferry that goes to Vieques to accomodate us and the rest. Of course, this was July which is peak season for internal tourism and family visiting family on the island (that was me LOL!!).
For Mr. Wilson traveling on a Tuesday in May, no problem. It should still be calm at the ticket booth. However, for Ms. Green traveling on a Sunday you may run into people traffic because weekends are busy. Try to be there early. Now I understand why so many people prefer to fly to Culebra. If you have the resources $$$ then fly but, if you're on a budget like me and there's 3 of us, $2.25 on a ferry sounds better. Hope this helps. Let us know of your adventures. Happy travels! J

Great, thank you for the information!

If all goes well, I will set up the reservation beforehand, land at SJU @ 1030 and be on the way to Fajardo from there, with plenty of time to spare for the 3pm ferry.

Wish us luck!!!

In my opinion, a reservations program just wouldn't work, at least not for a $2.25 ticket. People would just make a bunch of them figuring that it won't cost them anything much to not show up. It would take the ferry personnel an extra 30 minutes or more to sort it all out. The way it is now, there's little fuss or muss for the ferry personnel and boarding actually goes quite smoothly (in a cattle-like way).

A reservation sytem works for airplanes because there is a minimum $100 change fee if you don't show up that day.

In any case, the safest thing to do is to avoid weekends and a holidays. Even those often work out fine, but if you can travel midweek you can pretty much relax, especially if you get there at least an hour early and stake out a spot near the gate.

You CAN reserve a ticket but it's usually next to impossible given that the port authority rarely ever answers the phone.

If you are getting into SJ at 10:30, you should have no problem getting to the Fajardo ferry by noon since it's about a 50 minute drive. That should give you plenty of time to stand in line for your tickets.

I have taken the Sunday afternoon ferry plenty of times and have always made it on the ferry. I usually get there by 2pm.

It would be a good idea to get round-trip tickets once your there to avoid having to wait in line on your return to Fajardo.

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you! We are so excited for the trip. I think i'll try to call a couple times, but we should be there early enough not to be worried.

How about a Tuesday in June? I've just booked airfare into SJU for five of us and we've got a tight schedule landing at SJU at 3:00pm. There shows to be a 4:30pm cargo ferry and a 7:00pm passenger ferry. What are the odds we can make the 4:30?

For the 4:30 ferry, I would say slim, as you need to get there in time to get in line to purchase/pick up tickets. You will also have to wait for your luggage, unless you only do carry on. We had to wait at least 30 minutes to get ours. We are arriving at 3:10 and plan on catching the 7:00 ferry. Also, you will be traveling to Fajardo on a work day and there may be quite a bit of traffic on the way to Fajardo. Have fun. We arrive on Sat. July 19.

Thanks Vicki. We're arriving the Wed after you and staying for a week so definitely we'll have to check something. So, 7:00 ferry it is. The 3:10 arrival was the earliest we could get to SJU and not have to take out a second mortgage to pay for the tickets.

I've found that you can't count on the taxi ride taking only 50 minutes. It can take 70 or even more. It depends on traffic and construction.
