Underwater Scenery?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

hey all,

Me and the gf are thinking about take the East Wind Cats Culebra day trip this month during our visit to Puerto Rico. Does anyone know what we will get to see during the snorkeling? Will we see things like corals, fishes, stingrays, and big giant sharks?(jk)

The reason why I ask: I'm considering buying an underwater housing for my video camcorder to document the underwater scenery in Culebra. But if they don't take us to these places that you only see on Discovery channel or National Geographic, then I probably will save my money to buy gasoline.

Appreciate your feedback and comments or suggestions!

thanks,
Steve

Steve, I can give my opinion, for what it's worth: amateur underwater photos and videos are kind of boring. Even the professional ones can be boring even though they go to the best and most colorful reefs in the world with the best equipment.

Culebra has great snorkeling, but I wouldn't bother videoing it. Just relax and enjoy.

That being said, maybe you'd want to view such videos over and over again. But think twice about subjecting your friends to them. LOL.

For me, my mental images of my snorkeling experience are much more real than a video would be.

Just a suggestion...a woman comes here who does a lot of diving and a lot of underwater photography. She posts often on this site, and also on gotoculebra.com
Do a search on Diving Debbie: also Hillman, who has taken some stuning shots of what lies beneath (closely beneath) the water here.
There are some excellent potential video moments here...as well as stills. Your choice.

There's also the factor that there's a big difference between filming while snorkeling and filming while diving. I just don't think that a snorkeling perspective does justice, video-wise.

Only you can decide how much your memories
are worth. I brought a little (sony U-60)
underwater digital camera to Culebras well as
a sony 717 for use topside. Here's a link to
what I got...not spectacular but enough to
triger happy memories of the trip. The U-60
has since died and I have an Olympus 720SW
that can go underwater without a housing...there's
a newer Olympus now that can go even deeper.

Whatever you do don't focus so much on the photo/video
shooting so much that you can't kick back and enjoy
yourself while snorkeling.

I have to admit, I've gotten bored with u/w photography in Culebra. Maybe because I dive there so often. I get compliments on shots I think are pretty crappy, so depends on who your audience is. I have friends on scubadiving.com that shoot with mega expensive digital SLRs with housings and strobes and all the accoutrements who get shots NO ONE could ever get bored with. Oh yeah, they are traveling to Indonesia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea - the places National Geographic is made of. Culebra is nice; it's reefs are relatively healthy, but an amateur (like myself) is not likely to get any "money" shots in Culebra's waters (okay, I have a couple after 8 years of diving there). I say save your money for gasoline (you know, margarita-based gasoline while on vacation) and store the memories in your brain cells.
