ferry or plane?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My boyfriend and I are travelling to Culebra in the beginning of May and we are trying to determine the best and safest way to get there. I understand there is a passenger ferry that goes back an forth, do you know how long this ferry takes to get to Culebra? Do the flights only leave from San Juan airport? Can we take a water taxi to Culebra? If so, how much is it?

Thanks for any feedback!

I think your plans depend on your budget and time factor. A taxi from Luis Munoz Marin airport (Isla Verde) to Isla Grande Airport is almost $20, you should tip for each bag. It' a 10 minute ride. Airfare from Isla Grande to Culebra $90-$100 round trip ticket (maybe more with the rise in fuel prices). This route would get you from Isla Verde to Culebra in maybe 1 1/2 hours give or take the time to get your luggage, etc., it would get you to Culebra fast.

Another option is to take a publico (taxi) from Isla Verde to Fajardo (1 hour trip, maybe more depending on the traffic) which I've heard can cost about $65-$70 with John Rosario , (787)354-5851, or any other taxi driver. Check out the this website's travel blog for details about him, many comments that he is a good driver and responsible and will pick you up at the airport. At Fajardo, you take the ferry to Culebra for $2.25 one way ticket, a 1 1/4- 1 1/2 hour trip depending on the sea weather. This route is less money but it will require more time.

You can also take a plane from Fajardo. Again, depending on the fuel prices it may cost between $50-$100 round trip. Go to the TRANSPORT part of this website to find out about the airline companies. Maybe you can combine and enjoy the sites and talking to people along the way. Any route you pick will be safe. Check out the TRANSPORT part of this website for more info. Happy travels! J

Passenger ferry takes 75-90 minutes, depending on the seas.
Cargo ferry takes 120 minutes or so.
All ferries leave from Fajardo.
$4.50 per person r/t.

Flights leave from San Juan International ($130 r/t) , Isla Grande (15 minute cab ride from SJU, $100 r/t) and Fajardo ($70 r/t).

Not aware of water taxis.

All are safe.

If you do take a plane, Flamenco Air has the most frequent flights from San Juan and seems to be pretty reliable about leaving on time. We flew Vieques Air Link and while they were very nice and we enjoyed the flight, they only fly in the very early a.m. and late afternoon, and our flight to Culebra was re-routed through Vieques (we switched planes there) because they didn't have enough passengers, apparently. Flamenco seems to be the only airline that primarily flies to and from Culebra from Isla Grande airport.

Flying to Culebra was great and very convenient, but not for the faint of heart! For us it was a highlight of the trip, but man, I'm glad it wasn't too windy the days we flew.
