Hi yen,
You can walk easily from Casa Ensenada to town, the airport is a bit of a hike but doable, otherwise grab a ride at the airport. You can stand outside and grab a ride to Flamenco Beach via the publico, just know the timing of the ferry arrival. Guilan's water taxi picked me up at the Casa Ensenada dock to go to Culebrita. It is a good idea to rent a car for a day or so just to see the rest of the island. You will have a great time!

We were there for 7 nights and rented a jeep for one day so we could explore the island on our own. Rest of the time we took taxis/publicos or walked. That worked out fine for us. Depending on when you go and how busy it is you could always wait until you get there to decide...that's what we did.

I just got back after 6 days in Culebra. There is so much to see that it would not be feasible or much fun if you spent all your time walking. Granted, one could experience the local flavor of life by Culabranese inhabitants by foot, but the distance between the different corners of the island are not straight lines or level terrain. Even a day at Rosario and Tamarinda Grande requires a 30 minute hike from Flamenco...after a full or even half day there, an additional 30 minute hike back can make you pretty hot and thirsty. A nice car waiting would be be a welcomed relief where you could store extra supplies.
Another consideration about having a car is not missing out on a pretty nice selection of excellent restaurants away from Dewey and only accessible with wheels.
Finally, I might add, that the lack of lazy floating in calm waters is worth the sacrifice for the pristine isolation, lack of docked boats blocking your view, and unequal beauty of Resaca and Brava (both require transportation to the trails that access each paradise).
OH YEA, don't miss Zoni either ( the best of both worlds; calm, quiet, major gorgious, and again hard to get to without wheels).
No brainer on the car question! Enjoy and pick up your trash. Bring plenty of water and sun screen. I wish I could be your personal tour guide.

Blue's MD How was your birthday?

Also, Zen wouldn't like Resaca or Brava as she is looking for beaches that are calm. They are beautiful.

I agree we like having a car for all the reasons you mentioned.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

My birthday was quite the celebration with two great bands playing on a big stage in front of the town dock and everybody dancing! That Heinekin guy was pretty generous to arrange all that just for my birthday.

At this time of year is it usually possible to rent a car without reserving in advance? We are coming next week and planning to rent bikes, but we may change our minds once we get there and want to rent a car or jeep for a day or two. I'd much rather make all our decisions once we get there and see how we feel. :)
