Shipping Camping gear ahead
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I was wondering if anyone can suggest a) if sending camping gear ahead of time makes sense and b) who might be willing to assist us with the enterprise. I expect that the shipping costs would be high, but given the convenience of just having it there when we arrive, it's certainly something to think about:-)

I haven't done it myself but I have read postings from people who mail gear to themselves, c/o general delivery in Culebra. You would want to time it to arrive a few days before your arrival. When I check the US Post Office web-site and plug in numbers, I am surprised at how low the cost is. Of course the package dimension and weight must fit within the post office limits. In fact, the cost can be is competitive with the excess baggage cost on VAL or Flamenco.

You can ship it general delivery to the post office. I would call ahead and let them know it will be arriving and when you are planning to pick it up. Someone who lives on Culebra should be able to be more specific and give you the # to the Post Office on Culebra.

I'd just ship the necessities. Tent, sleeping bags, light backpacker stove, a couple pots and pans and utensils and a whisk broom to get the sand out of your tent ;-) You might pack them in a light weight cooler. Hopefully Diving Debbie will see this and add her knowledge.

Hi John,

You need to get on the post office website and check out their size and weight restrictions. When you get into bigger packages there are only two ways to send it and the price goes up and up. We shipped a cooler filled with stuff and it was at least $50. If that is your only box and you would spend more than that to rent, then it's worth it. The biggest size box they would allow, anywhere below it's weight limit, is going to run you around $120-$150. Also make sure you take the time frame into consideration. From Ohio, we were told it could be anywhere from 4-6 weeks.

Good luck!

Sue

Debbie, I am sure shipping camping gear is not that much different from shipping diving gear ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
