I hate people who don't get Culebra!

I hate people who don't get Culebra! I also hate people who get on this website and post stupid questions about the island. People who complain about the way things are on Culebra clearly did not read about the island and clearly do not understand what a gem it is! Sorry for the vent, I just get sick of seeing the same dumb posts! I love Culebra, I found out about Culebra about 8 years ago and was just able to visit for the first time last year. Before my visit I learned all about the island. When I arrived it was everything I wanted and more! Culebra is perfect, I love that it is laid back and that things aren't always perfect, that is what makes it perfect! On my visit I came across some of the imperfections that people complain about and I just set back and relaxed, who cares I am on an awesome island!

Alright I'm Done!

Dear "Culebra" -

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but using seven exclamation points in one post exceeds the maximum allowed in the user agreement you signed when registering for the forum.

Your posting ability has been revoked for 72 hours while the moderator re-evaluates your credentials.

Recently I spent 10 days on Culebra and didn't use one exclamation point while speaking ... although I did get lots of zzzzzzzzzs.

it was awesome!!!!!!!

Crap ... that's seven at once. My bad.

:-)

Frank: didn't at one point you say "wow!!!!!!!!" or "yeah!!!!!!!!" or "mmmmm!!!!!!!!!" ?????????

is there a statuatory limit on question marks and where will we draw this line on the tyranny of punctuation?

C: the ones who don't get it won't be back, let them gripe.

as my fave grumpy bartender in SF used to say "I think you'll be happier at the establishment down the street" if they persisted he'd add "I'm semi-retired and don't need this $%^#"

Mostly good, Mr./Ms Culebra. However, let's cut the askers of questions some slack. Once the old threads have gone 'round the bend, only sophisticated search techniques can unearth a given topic. After all, if the questions were all answered, we'd have no reason to come to our favorite bulletin boards and get our e-fix of Culebra vibrations!

I think that this is a great time to acknowledge Michael, MJ, Richard, Doug, Owlihoot and all the regular posters for their extreme helpfulness and patience with all who want to find out more about Culebra.

If they hated everyone who posted questions, there would be no board. And it sure wouldn't represent the attitude that makes Culebra so special.

I am one among MANY who are grateful that they "get" us people who are sincere and friendly and who just want to learn more about the best island vacation we will ever have. And I'm grateful for their sense of humor, too, especially MJ.

Cheers to you all!

I've been to Culebra about 6 times and I love it! most of the times i've been sailing around the island and slept in the sailboat but other times i've stayed in the island. I know it's not perfect, I don't like the road conditions, restaurants(expensive and nothing special) but I love the beauty, people and the simple humble lifestyle, very different from living in PR mainland like myself.

I guess people want a Tahiti $50,000 experience with all the commodities at home. Culebra has a laid back relaxed style and I love it. Hope to go each and every year from now on if God allows it! :)

I agree with you CULEBRA...our family always gives us a hard time about going to the same place every year and not being at a resorty-type location. But that's why we love it because we are not THOSE people. On our first trip to Culebra we had the plane ride all to ourselves on Vieques Air Link and our pilot took us on an extended flight to overlook the eastern side of Puerto Rico (we tipped him for being so kind and spontaneous with us). We arrived in the morning around 9am and we headed to Flamenco as I am sure most do on their first trip, and we bought food from one of the kiosks and our first breakfast there was meatballs with diet coke. We even took pictures because we were so happy I wish I could post them here. My husband and I were in heaven at that moment and it just kept getting better.

I can't wait to come back in July.

I do have to say how helpful this forum has been and how much my husband and I love reading other peoples first experiences to Culebra. It always reminds us of our first time.

Well, hate is a word I reserve for really rare situations, but I'm a word freak, so I get the idea here...

But personally, I'd use the word vexed.

vexed
adj 1: troubled persistently especially with petty annoyances;
"harassed working mothers"; "a harried expression";
"her poor pestered father had to endure her constant
interruptions"; "the vexed parents of an unruly
teenager" [syn: annoyed, harassed, harried, pestered]
2: causing difficulty in finding an answer or solution; much
disputed; "the vexed issue of priorities"; "we live in
vexed and troubled times"

One of my favorite people is a woman from Dominica. She uses the word vexed in a way that is strong enough to hope it is never directed toward me. "He vexed me so BAD, girl!!!" Yikes!

Bottom line - yep, sometimes I get vexed and give voice...but it all rolls out in the wash eventually...and Culebra, sort of like the sun and sea - pretty much ignores me and carries right on being Culebra...a good thing, and good advice :)

The word I tend to use for people that don't "get" Culebra is "pity".
Yup that's it. I actually feel sorry for those that don't get it.

ps -- I was just just joking about the exclamation point thing. A poorly executed joke that tried to tie back into the laid-back nature of the island. As they say, if you have to explain it, it wasn't very funny to begin with! :-)

I'm glad you all get it but, you come for vacation, eat, sleep and leave. Hopefully, with a wonderful island experience and promising yourself to return. We had many conversations with the Culebrenses and, as much as they love the island, the sacrifices they endure are many, with no help from the Department of Tourism or the many government agencies that seem to turn their backs on them on their requests for help. What seemed to come up again and again in our conversations was the lack of interest (from the government) in improving the ferry system on which they greatly depend on, not only for their own transport to the mainland but also to bring visitors and help sustain their livelihood. Not everyone has $100 for a round trip airplane flight. When Culebrenses get sick (cancer, etc) they have to go to the mainland to seek treatment, sometimes the pilots will give them a free ride, sometimes. The guy that has the fruit stand near the airport must sleep in his truck the couple of days he is selling his goods. The single mom who has one of the kiosks at the entrance to Flamenco suffers when it's a slow day and she has to throw out most of the food (May-June season). Culebra was left high and dry just as they were going to open their new school in '07. The situation in PR is very grim, problems in the school system, health, crime, economy, even politicians violently insulting and hitting each other and as a puertorrican living in the states I can only do but very little. When I visit my native island and I see something unfair, I send a letter, Email or comment because I want my fellow compatriotas to live a good life so YOU can have a wonderful vacation and come back. Help us make PR and especially Culebra a great place to vacation. Be nice! Happy Travels! J

Frank: I was just kidding. I like lame jokes and even better, stories that go nowhere - there's a reason why Pynchon is one of my favorite authors.

Mort: you flatter me and in fact I know nothing and am not a reliable source of info, the others you name are much better. I mostly post out of boredom and wishful thinking and in hopes that the few who may troll or lurk will understand this is not a Sandals/pre-planned/pre-prepared kinda place.

Richard, you're too modest!

But I do disagree with on one thing... Culebra is definitely a sandals type of place. That's all I wore! Well, in truth I went barefoot most of the time.

I LOVE people who "don't get" Culebra!!!! They'll go home and tell the other, what no Disco/all inclusive/mega hotel, dweebs that Culebra is a no go. That way no more crappy resorts will get built, the septic system won't get over taxed, and I won't get turned away from Barbra Rosa's 'cause she has sold out at 7pm. My greatest fear is that everyone will love it as much as we all seem to, and I'll have to buy tickets from Disney to snorkel at Carlos Rosario.
