Spending the day for the first time
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I need help. I'm going to culebra to spend the day this saturday and I have some doubts

1) If I travel to fajardo in my own car, where would I leave it to get on the ferry?

2) What are the odds of me and 3 friends getting tickets if we were to take the 9AM ferry and arrive around 8:30?

3) None of us is 25...24 is the oldest, so we can't rent a car. How can I be sure that I will get transportation from the ferry dock to Flamenco beach?

Also, the weather channel has pointed a sever weather warning with high surf. I'm looking out my window and it's dry and sunny. Anyone has anything to add about this? Some of my friends have work at night and I'd hate to be stranded due to the weather....

I'd appreciate immediate response since I need to make the decision tonight.

1. There are several parking lots just before you take the left to the ferry dock. All reports indicate they are safe places to leave your car.

2. Predicting odds when Culebra is involved is a risky venture. Somewhere between 1% and 99%. I am not trying to be a wise-guy or funny here ... you just never know. To me, that's part of the beauty of the Culebra experience. For others it might be considered a curse. I was "on-island" last week and saw the passenger ferry stop running, stranding quite a few people. Those able to "go with the flow" considered it an adventure ... others kind of freaked out and were miserable. One thing is for sure: The earlier you arrive, the better chance you have. The ticket windows are across the street from the ferry dock.

3. Transportation is easy. When the ferry lands there are numerous van-taxi-bus type vehicles. Me thinks it is $3 per person one way. And when it's time to return, those same vehicles are waiting in the Flamenco parking lot to bring you back!

One last thing: the food at the beach is actually pretty good ... light years ahead of 8-10 years ago. For 5 bucks you can eat pretty well.

Have fun ... good luck ... and know many folks are jealous you will be there when we are not!

36 days and counting!
(See I just got back 3 days ago but can't wait to go again!)

Thank you guys. I pretty much would find it an adventure. It's the folks of some of the other travellers who can somewhat a pain in the ----------. Well don't be too jealous....unfortunately, due to the weather it's been postponed. I've been there when I was a kid with my brother and his boy scouts....I love it. I absolutely love it down there. I'm really eager to go.

Either way thank you a lot for the info. I'll keep it in mind for next time.

G'day

although your trip was postponed, I'll comment on the latest crowds issues.

we recommend (especially during high season) to our guests to arrive at least an hour prior to the ferry's departure to get tickets.

we have had several guests not be able to get on their preferred ferries due to sold out boats (coming & going from Culebra). that said, a friend on this side just purchased some return (to Fajardo) tix for family members at 6am & there wasn't much of a line...

reports from guests arriving on the afternoon boat today were that it was rocky & several people felt ill. it's quite windy here tonight & a swell is expected tomorrow.

happy travels!
