hi theresa,
we used to live in samoa & passed through hawaii often!

i've booked tix in advance for the passenger ferry as well, however, it was done in person. i don't know how much luck you can have on the phone. an hour ahead is what is recommended for queing up for your tix at the ferry terminal on the day of your trip.
