Camping and Diving
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Jeremy Phillips (---.gw.upmc.edu)

I read that camping is only permitted on one of the beaches. Is this true? My friends and I were planning on doing some backpacking...should we plan to do this activity while on our trip to the island?

Also, is there any place to rent skooba gear or at least a place to fill air tanks?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Camping is allowed in one place only--Flamenco Beach

You can contact Culebra Divers to rent diving gear, the phone number is on this web site

Thanks for the feedback,

Just to be clear...there is no camping allowed ANYWHERE else on the island, even inland? What happens if you decide to camp in some random spot inland?

Thanks,

Jeremy

what we would like to do is hike the island and camp in random places. We typically travel light and simply camp with a hammock and small fire for cooking

can this be done

Culebra is a tinder-dry environment, hence kindle no fire other than where indicated, in a pit in the campground. You and your friend can hang your hammock for $10/night in the campground & with that fee support the water, trash removal and toilet facilities. Enjoy Culebra.

No. Most of Culebra is a Wildlife Refuge and camping is not allowed anywhere outside of Flamenco Beach's campsite. You'll be plenty happy there, exploring the island throughout the day.

there have been some serious fires in recent years.

realize: so much is protected and if something goes off, it can be horrendous - no immediate response team, no groundwater.

besides, there's not far to go from base camp anyway.

maybe you want el Yunque or Costa Rica?

why would anyone want to camp inland? it is all dry and stuff. It is much better to camp on the beach. and Flamenco beach is the best place for it. Culebra is a small island, it does not matter where you camp, you can hike anywhere and come back to Flamenco i no time

We did some hiking when my husband and I were there last week. We hiked up the road to the top of Mt. REsaca and then down to Playa Resaca . On the road near the mountain top we saw a large 2-3 foot lizard that looked like the iguanas I've seen in Bonaire and there were very cool LARGE turtle tracks in several places on the beach.

We also drove out past the cemetery a ways and did the hike out to Playa Brava - more turtle tracks and some great views of Cayo Norte. Late another afternoon, we went to Zoni, went west/north along the beach and scrambled around the point on the rocks to get to a small beach named Tortuga. We then scrambled/ambled back to our car as the sun was setting - the low lighting, backlit clouds and surf made it one of my favorite times of the week.

Other than a couple of body surfers at Playa Brava, we had the beaches and trails all to ourselves, so there's plenty of opportunity to get away from the crowds at Flamenco during the day. Also, campfires and flashlights are not allowed on these remote turtle nesting beaches because the lights can disturb the turtles.

Finally, in addition to the possibility of forest fires, the island "forest" is not particularly conducive to hiking, unless you're on a well-worn path. It's thick, dense, tangled with vines in many places and filled with thorny shrubs and trees. It would not be pleasant to make your way through with a backpack on. I think Richard's right, you should probably save the backpacking trip for a more suitable environment.

yes, it is pretty thorny, we were hiding in the shade close to the beach in the bushes, and we were all covered in thorns, hard to get out of clothes, and pretty painful...so you definately better off on the beach. there is widelife, and there is no need to disturb it. we saw a deer when we were walking to Carlos Rosario

Interesting. I've seen deer on the east end of the island, but never anywhere else. They look like the key deer that are found in the Florida Keys.

Happy Diving!

I didn't even mention deer, because I thought that they were pretty common. We saw a single deer one day on the way out to Carlos Rosario and 3 deer together on the way back from Tamarindo one afternoon- same path. I think that they're just white tail deer, but they were on the small side.
